Journey with us to the top of Africa’s fifth-highest peak, Mount Meru, rising to an elevation of 4,566m. This challenging 6-day expedition (4 hiking days) begins at Momella Gate, traversing lush forests teeming with wildlife, including giraffes, buffaloes, and zebras, accompanied by an armed ranger. The trek involves steep ascents to Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut, with an acclimatization hike to Little Meru. The demanding summit push starts at midnight, aiming for a glorious sunrise view of Kilimanjaro and the Meru crater. The descent includes a visit to Tululunsi Waterfalls, concluding with a return to Arusha and Nairobi. This physically and mentally exerting hike requires pre-qualification through high-altitude endurance training.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Leave Nairobi at 6:30 a.m. for Arusha, Tanzania. Meet mountain guides for a briefing, followed by dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel.

After breakfast, transfer from Arusha to Momella Gate. Process park registration and begin a walk through lush forest, spotting wildlife like giraffes, buffaloes, and zebras, accompanied by an armed ranger. Carry a packed lunch; hot meals and beverages at Miriakamba Hut. Terrain: Forest | Distance: 11km | Elevation Gain: 1,000m | Time: 6–7 hours.

Continue trek on a steep forest path, spotting wildlife. Enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Meru crater and ash tray. Arrive at Saddle Hut for lunch and rest. Optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for panoramic views. Early dinner and rest for summit push. Terrain: Forest | Distance: 6km | Elevation Gain: 1,000m | Time 4–6 hours.

Wake at half past midnight for the summit push. Have tea and light snacks. Cross steep trail to Rhino Point (3,800m) and Cobra Point (4,350m). Traverse a rocky ridge to Mount Meru summit for sunrise views of Kilimanjaro. Descend to Saddle Hut for brunch, then continue to Miriakamba Hut for the last night. Terrain: Alpine Desert | Distance: 5km up, 13km down | Elevation Gain: 1,066m | Time: 10–12 hours.

Requirements
What to Bring:
  • Physical fitness, with emphasis on cardiovascular training
  • Understanding of gear and layering at high elevations
  • High-altitude training (in the 3,500+ mASL elevations) within one month ahead of the climb for altitude acclimatization

  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate
